46 MW Wasabizawa geothermal plant starts operation in Japan

Japan sees the first geothermal power plant over 10 MW in 23 years starting operation today with the 46 MW Wasabizawa geothermal power plant in Yuzawa, Akita Prefecture, Japan.

As announced today, the 42 MW Wasabizawa geothermal power plant commenced commercial operations today in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture, Japan.

The plant was developed by Yuzawa Geothermal Power Generation Corporation, a joint venture by Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Materials Corporation and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc.

Work on the plant started in May 2015.  The plant has an installed power generation capacity of 46,199 kW. This is the first geothermal power plant over 10 MW that started operation in Japan in 23 years, as reported by the company today.

The Wasabizawa geothermal plant is the 7th largest geothermal power plant in Japan.

This project is supported by Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation, applying a debt guarantee project for geothermal resource development funding.

Yuzawa Geothermal Power Generation Corporation will contribute to expanded utilization of renewable energy through stable operation of Wasabizawa Geothermal Power Plant.
