Baatan’s 600 MW geothermal development important to region

Two geothermal power projects of together 600 MW will help solve power shortage in the Philippine region of Bataan and Luzon.

Reported from the Philippines, “Bataan Second District Rep. Albert Garcia said that the 600-megawatt twin geothermal power plants here, which are now under construction, will solve power shortage and cut electricity rate in Bataan and other areas in the Luzon grid.

The congressman said the groundbreaking of the twin geothermal power plants in barangay Alas-asin, this town, was held last week

He said the construction of the power plants costs $1 billion and will be finished in two to three years.

Garcia added the twin geothermal power plants could support the anticipated surge in the area’s electricity needs of the newly created Freeport Area of Bataan (FAB), located in this town.

The solon sponsored Republic Act 9728, which converted the Bataan Economic Zone into the FAB, seen to become a major free-port and economic zone due to its strategic location along the Manila Bay.

He said the FAB will become a magnet for investors and new locators, which would need electricity for their operation.

Earlier, Gov. Enrique Garcia said the construction and actual operation of the twin plants here will create hundreds of jobs for Bataan residents and thus would help the local economy.

Bataan is the first province in Luzon and the second in the country to have energized its 459 sitios 100 percent, said the Peninsula Electric Cooperative (Penelco), electricity distributor in the province.

Bataan also has the distinct record of being the first province in the country to complete the energization of all the 240 barangays in its 11 municipalities and one city in 1997.

Penelco is also the first electric cooperative in the country to establish substations in every town and city.”
