Bavaria wins the Deep Geothermal Champion 2021 award

Bavaria wins the Deep Geothermal Champion award for having the highest growth in deep geothermal capacity in 2021

The German Geothermal Association (BVG) has declared the Free State of Bavaria the Champion of Deep Geothermal Energy 2021. The award was given to Bavaria for having the largest growth in deep geothermal energy output of 2.6 MW per 100,000 people.

At the event, Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder reiterated the goal of using geothermal energy to provide 25 percent of their heating requirements by 2050 –  a commitment the state has made in a previous declaration. “Geothermal is a real climate ace for Bavaria,” he added. Prime Minister Söder also took  a guided tour of the GEOVOL facility in Unterföhring before the awarding ceremony.

“Bavaria has a pioneering role and is the competence leader when it comes to geothermal energy. This is not only due to the very good geological conditions, but also to the courage to drill and the know-how that has developed here over the past two decades.” said BVG President Helge-Uve Braun.

Braun also took this opportunity to appeal for support for geothermal. “Geothermal research and development have a permanent place in the Geothermal Alliance Bavaria. But further efforts are needed. In order to achieve the 25 percent target, it is urgently necessary to expand geothermal energy more intensively. We need a systematic state exploration of the subsoil and protection against the exploration risk in geothermal drilling.” he added.
