Breaking news: agreements signed on 500 MW Tulu Moye project, Ethiopia

In a ceremony today, the Government of Ethiopia, Ethiopian Electric Power and Tulu Moye Geothermal, a joint venture between Meridiam
and Reykjavik Geothermal (RG) finalized the contracts for the 520 MW geothermal power project in Tulu Moye, today. The project is part of a historic agreement, along with the Corbetti Geothermal project, to build 1000 megawatts of geothermal power in Ethiopia.

The Tulu Moye Geothermal project is led by French, US and Icelandic investors and brings the preeminent Icelandic geothermal scientists to Ethiopia, in a great example of international cooperation at its best. The vision of the Ethiopian Government leaders to develop their vast geothermal resources, by partnering with international scientific expertise and private sector financing, has become a reality. Tulu Moye Geothermal will continue to work in the coming years with the technical and financial experts in Ethiopia to develop a leading global geothermal industry.

The Tulu Moye Geothermal Project will be constructed in the area around the Tulu Moye volcano in Oromia. The site has been studied intensely by the RG team and Ethiopian scientists together for the past 3 years. The results of the study have found the area to be one of the best geothermal resources in the world and it is expected to be able to sustain more than the original 500 MW planned for the initial project. The partners at Tulu Moye are planning to have the first 50MW on line by 2020 and the full 500 MW by 2023. The full project will be a private investment into Ethiopia of more than $USD 2 billion.
