Brexit likely delaying power Iceland-UK power interconnector
While likely not derailing plans for a power interconnector between Iceland and the UK that could export geothermal power to the UK, the Brexit decision will likely delay progress on the project.
The planned Iceland-UK power interconnector has seen a lot of interest in the past few years, and we have reported repeatedly on it.
With a planned length of around 1,000 kilometers it would be the world’s longest power interconnector and could deliver geothermal power to the UK from Iceland’s geothermal and hydro power plants.
In an interview with Reuters, the CEO of National Power Company (Landsvirkjun), Hördur Arnason, said that the recent decision by the British people to exit the European Union (Brexit) has an impact on the current status.
In the article of Power Engineering Internationa, the owners of the ElecLink interconnector project don´t anticipate any problems arising from the Brexit decision.
While it is likely not completely derailing the project, current political realities and decisions to be made are though likely delaying the project.
