Burghausen, Germany to invest €27m to build geothermal heating network

The city of Burghausen in Germany will be investing EUR 27 million to build a district heating network to supply geothermal heat from Kirchweidach-Halsbach.

The city of Burghausen in Bavaria, Germany and local utility Energie Burghausen GmbH (EBG) have approved an investment of EUR 27 million for the implementation of the Burghausen geothermal heating network. This follows last year’s heat supply agreement with Naturwärme Kirchweidach-Halsbach, which sets the framework for the supply of geothermal heat from the Kirchweidach-Halsbach geothermal heating plant.

Heat doesn’t get more sustainable or sensible than this,” said Mayor Florian Scheider. “With this decision, we are implementing one of the most important future projects for our city. We are creating an attractive heating option for citizens, making a sustainable contribution to climate protection, and making Burghausen a pioneer in the municipal heat transition.”

According to current plans, the first phase of the expanded heating network will be operational by 2028.

The decision to invest was based on the successful acquisition of initial customers for the future heating network, among other factors. This has helped put the project on sound economic footing. Following this decision, negotiations with banks and a request for federal funding will now proceed. EBG is also seeking to connect additional potential heat customers.

A 10-kilometer pipeline is currently under construction from Kirchweidach for the heat supply, as implemented by the city of Burghausen. The heat will then be transferred to the Burghausen district heating network.
