Can geothermal deliver? Praxisforum Geothermie.Bayern – Oct. 27-29, 2021

Geothermal Energy has a tremendous potential and can play a major role in the energy transition. Vast amounts of heat down under our feet. But instead of being the superhero of the energy transition and contributing with its many advantages, like the baseload capacity, the development of new plants is slow. However, new technologies and especially the demand of decarbonized heat promise an accelerated development in the future. Within this respect, middle Europe and especially Germany are innovations motors.

Transition is the magic word. Towards CO2-free electricity supply and from fossil to CO2-neutral and finally CO2-depleted heating grids. This is the framework of the upcoming Praxisforum Geothermie.Bayern from October 27 to 29, 2021 at the geothermal energy site of Pullach in the South of Munich.

The role of geothermal in future green heating grids and the heat transition in Munich, technically and economically are the topics of the KeyNote session of the congress. Following the keynotes follows the forum about heat utilization showcasing new projects in Bavaria and the option of offering medium deep geothermal in combination with a heat pump for many more communities. Voluntary trading of CO2-certificates offer possibilities for additional revenues and citizen cooperatives elevate the public acceptance.

After lunch the award session follows. The energy political spokesman of the Social Democratic Party introduces his view on the energy transition before data of operations of the geothermal plants in Bavaria are introduced and the most efficient heat and combined heat and power plant in 2020 are awarded. The Christian-Hecht-Award honors the best junior scientist for applied work related to Geothermal Energy in Southern Germany.

Last but not least, the following session will focus on the combination of heat and electricity. Here an outlook of the possible future regulatory framework and funding schemes, drilling contracts and the economics of geothermal electricity production in combination with heat is discussed. Turboden introduces further developments for combined heat and electricity production.

A field trip to the newest power plant by Silenos Energy at Garching an der Alz, a RAG and Strabag joint venture closes this year’s Praxisforum on October 29, 2021. The field trip, as well as the opportunities during the congress and the Icebreaker event the evening ahead of the congress offers lots of possibilities of networking and informal discussions for example about projects, which are ready-to-drill.
