Cumberland County, Canada invests on geothermal exploration

The province of Nova Scotia in Canada is investing $80,000 on a study to determine the potential of harness the geothermal resources in the municipality of Cumberland County. The project will led by a working group with representatives from the Government of Nova Scotia, the municipality, and the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Cumberland campus.

Earlier this year, the Government of Canada also announced a $1.3 million investment in Net Zero Atlantic for an initiative that aims to build development capacity for mid-depth geothermal energy projects in five Mi’kmaw and twelve rural communities in Nova Scotia.

Other municipalities in Nova Scotia have been successful in using geothermal energy for heating, notably the project in Springhill that extracts geothermal energy from water from abandoned mines.

“It is very exciting for the Municipality of Cumberland to see this initiative progressing. With the support of the provincial government, we will be able to build upon previous successful geothermal research in the area. With the need to explore and expand renewable energy opportunities, this is the time to pursue this very valuable resource,” said Murray Scott, Mayor of the municipality of Cumberland.
