Details on the Laguna Colorada geothermal project in Bolivia
The contract for the construction of the 5 MW pilot plant in the Sol de Mañana geothermal field, Laguna Colorada, Bolivia has been awarded to Sacyr Industrial and Ormat.
The Ministry of Economy and Public Finance of Bolivia has announced the signing of the contract for the construction of the 5-MW pilot plant at the Sol de Mañana geothermal field in Bolivia. The contract was awarded to to a consortium (UTE) consisting of Ormat Internacional Inc., Sacyr Industrial Bolivia SIB, and Sacyr Industrial SL. The prospect is located near Laguna Colorada and the famous Uyuni salt flat at an altitude of almost 4980 km.
The contract is worth $17.99 million and includes “the detailed engineering, supply of equipment and materials, civil construction and electromechanical assembly, testing, and startup of the Laguna Colorada geothermal power plant.” The drilling works are being offered under another tender in which the leading hydrocarbon exploration companies such as Schlumberger and Halliburton are expected to participate.
The Bolivian government and the Bolivian National Electricity Company Ende have spent several years exploring the geothermal resource in the plateau, and have estimated that the resource occupies an area of 4 square kilometers and has a temperature of 250 ºC. Geothermal experts from Costa Rica and Japan have estimated a potential of 250 MW for the Laguna Colorada geothermal project.
