Dewhurst Group receives geothermal exploration permit for Condor Paipa, Colombia

Dewhurst Group has been officially awarded the geothermal exploration permit for the Condor Paipa Geothermal Project in Boyaca, Colombia.

Dewhurst Group has announced that it has received the exploration permit for the Condor Paipa Geothermal Project in the municipality of Paipa in Boyaca, Colombia. This now formalizes the start of the exploration phase in Condor Paipa and positions Paipa as a strategic region for the country’s geothermal development.

The permit had already been granted as of February 2026 and formally took effect on April 2026. The milestone is the culmination of a years-long process that involved technical reviews, environmental documentation, and coordination with Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy.

“Receiving Colombia’s first commercial-scale geothermal exploration permit is an important milestone for our team, for Paipa and Boyacá, and for the country. For us, this isn’t just a technical achievement, it reflects years of work, of building trust, of environmental responsibility, and of a commitment to developing geothermal energy in a way that creates real value for the territory,” said Marck Vargas, Colombia Operations Manager for Dewhurst Group.

“This permit is a first step, but an important one: it gives Colombia the chance to show that geothermal can become a reliable, local, long-term source of clean energy, while driving economic development, job creation, and new opportunities for the communities around the project.”

The Condor Paipa project is located in one of the areas with the highest geothermal potential in Colombia based on more than 30 years of studies done by the Servicio Geologico Colombiano (SGC). Based on these studies, the inferred temperature at Condor Paipa can support commercial power generation. With the Termopaipa energy complex nearby, the region already has road access, transmission infrastructure, and an experienced local workforce that can support future geothermal development.

Beyond electricity generation, the project is also being built around a cascading use model that aims to extend geothermal energy supply to sectors such as agribusiness, tourism, hospitality, scientific research, and academic training. This initiative aspires to generate long-term territorial value through an interdisciplinary, community-centered approach which can be a model for future geothermal development across Colombia.
