Drilling is well under way at the Aluto-Langano geothermal project in Ethiopia, with the first well and the start of drilling of the second of planned 8 wells for the project.

With a driling start  Aluto-Langano geothermal project has kicked off and Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen), supporting drilling for the project has announced having reached 450 meters of a drilling depth of the first of eight geothermal wells for the state-owned electricity producer, Ethiopia Electric Power Company.

Drilling for the project is expected to reach up to 3,000 meters, accordingly to Rebecca Miano, Managing Director and CEO of KenGen. The expected drilling rate is expected to be 50 meters per day, with the expectation to complete the remaining drilling on schedule in about two months.

KenGen won a joint contract with Shandong Kerui Petroleum Equipment Company and Shandong Kerui Oilfield Service Group in early 2019 to offer geothermal drilling services.

The project is being managed between the two consortium members under the contract. KenGen has dispatched a team to mobilize a second rig to fast track process with the goal to drilling eight wells much faster. Drilling of the second will started last week and reached a depth of around 40 meters last week.
