Drilling contract signed for capacity expansion of Maibarara geothermal field, Philippines
Maibarara Geothermal Inc has signed a contract with ThermaPrime for an exploration drilling campaign to support capacity expansion at its geothermal field.
Maibarara Geothermal Inc (MGI) has signed a contract with ThermaPrime Drilling Corp. (TDC) for an exploration drilling campaign to support the potential capacity expansion of the Maibarara geothermal field in Batangas and Laguna in the Philippines. Drilling operations are expected to run from October 2026 to May 2027.
Based on the contract, TDC will drill three firm wells and one contingent well using its Drilling Rig 7. Target depths for the geothermal wells are between 2100 to 3000 meters. The rig is scheduled for mobilization by September 2026.
“We are thus pleased to tap ThermaPrime with its highly-skilled and experienced workforce and well-maintained rig and equipment in our drilling campaign where some of the initialand most complicated risks in geothermal energy development are often encountered,” said MGI Executive Vice President and COO Maria Victoria Olivar.
In 2025, MGI filed regulatory documentation indicating plans of expanding their existing geothermal power facility by an additional 25 to 40 MW of capacity. According to the filing, construction of the power new plant is targeted to start by the fourth quarter of 2027. Commissioning is then planned for between 2029 to 2031, with target of commercial operations by 2031. MGI currently the 20-MW Maibarara 1 and the 12-MW Maibarara 2 geothermal power plants.

TDC is a wholly owned subsidiary of First Balfour, Inc, a member of the Lopez Group of Companies, which also owns and operates geothermal power plants in the Philippines through First Gen Corp.
