Drilling for geothermal heating starts in Konskie, Poland

Drilling of the first well for a planned geothermal district heating project in Konskie, Poland has started and is expected to be completed by February 2026.

Geothermal drilling for potential district heating supply has officially started in the city of Konskie in Poland. The work is being done by UOS Drilling and is expected to last until February 2026.

The drilling operation is targeting to reach a depth of 2110 meters, where thermal waters at temperatures of around 55 °C and flowrates  of 100 m3/hour are expected. Drilling of well GT-1 is being done within the premises of the local heating company Thermal Energy Company (Przedsi?biorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej) with the long-term plan of utilizing the geothermal resource for district heating. Connecting the thermal waters to the city’s heating system will be easiest and cheapest from the current well location.

Konskie was one of the communes selected to receive funding for geothermal exploration under the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW) in late 2024. The city has been allocated about PLN 13 million (approx. USD 4.13 million) from the fund, which covers a majority of the cost of the drilling contract. The contract with UOS Drilling was signed earlier this year at a cost of about PLN 16 million.

Following the drilling phase, laboratory analyses, well testing, and interpretation of geophysical data will follow to enable the resource assessment and preparation of a geothermal development concept. If the results are positive, the city will begin preparations for the drilling of a second well and the integration of the geothermal system with the district heating network.
