Drilling of 3.9-km geothermal well in Banska Nizna, Poland completed

The drilling of the Banska PGP-7 well has been completed  in the village of Banska Nizna in Poland. Although the well had already reached its current depth of 3915 meters mMD / 3595 meters TVD a few months ago, the decision to terminate the drilling operations at this depth was made more recently. The new well is expected to support the supply of geothermal heat in the Podhale region.

“We have completed a key technical stage: drilling a nearly four-kilometer directional well, the deepest point of which is over 1,100 meters from the drilling point. This trajectory allowed us to precisely reach the designated deposit area,” said Wojciech Drzymala, CEO of PEC Geotermia Podhalanska.

Drilling operations at PGP-7 were executed by UOS Drilling. The project is led by local utility PEC Geotermia Podhalanska.

With the production head now installed at the well, the next step will be to conduct the tests to evaluate the well’s hydrogeological parameters. This will determine the potential contribution of the PGP-7 well to the local district heating system. It is initially assumed that the well will be connected to the district heating system by Q4 2026. Preparations are already underway to build the infrastructure needed for this connection, but required administrative approvals still need to be secured.

Drilling of the Banska PGP-7 well is part of the Polska Geotermia Plus program, which aims to increase the use of geothermal resources for heating in Poland. The project has received funding support of PLN 52 million (approx. USD 14.3 million) from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The full project, which includes the installation of heat exchangers, construction of a cooling tower, and construction of heating networks and connections has an estimated total cost of PLN 88 million.
