Drilling of geothermal well in Radoszyce, Poland completed but flow is insufficient

A geothermal well has been drilled at Radoszyce, Poland reaching target temperatures, but remediation is being planned to address insufficient flow.

Drilling of the geothermal well in the commune of Radoszyce in Poland has been completed after three months, going beyond its initial target depth at 1470 meters and reaching thermal waters at 40 ºC. However, initial assessments indicate that the flowrate of the well will not be enough to support commercial operations.

Drilling of the geothermal well in Radoszyce started in April 2026, targeting the Antoniow Reservoir which was expected to host thermal waters at 40 – 45 ºC. The well was drilled at a cost of over PLN 12 million (USD 3.2 million), which was fully financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW).

Upon detailed testing after drilling, the productivity of the well was lower than was expected during the preparation of the investment. Thus, further research is being done to increase the well’s productivity with the help of specialists from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow.

The results of the well tests and samples collected during drilling are currently being analyzed. The results from this study will provide the bases for expanding the scope of work for the geothermal well to possibly implement stimulation measures.

Radoszyce authorities mentioned a notable similar case, where chemical stimulation of a geothermal well in Kazimierza Wielka increased the flowrate of the well from 9 m3/h to about 82 m3/h. However, the authorities are also quick to mention that such a treatment may not necessarily work in Radosyzce. Thus, the characteristics of the well as well as the local hydrological and geological conditions still need to be studied.

The initial investment decision considered the use of thermal waters from the well for recreational facilities, such as geothermal pools. The local government is also considering using the resource for heat supply over the long term. However, the viability of these plans now depend on the plans for increasing the capacity of the well, and how effective the measures will be.
