Drilling officially starts for Neuruppin geothermal project, Germany

Drilling has officially started for a geothermal doublet that will supply heat to the existing heating network of Neuruppin in Brandenburg, Germany.

Drilling has officially started for a proposed geothermal district heating network project for the town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg, Germany.  The project by Stadtwerke Neuruppin GmbH (SWN) is being drilled by Daldrup & Söhne AG with planning and consultancy provided by Geothermie Neubrandenburg GmbH (GTN).

The start of drilling was officially commemorated with an event attended by Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BWMK) Michael Kellner (Alliance 90/The Greens) and President of the Brandenburg State Parliament Ulrike Liedtke (SPD). Joining the event was a team of GTN drilling technicians and geologists, as well as representatives from Daldrup & Söhne and other service companies.

The drilling order received by Daldrup & Söhne is for two geothermal wells, each to a depth of around 1700-2000 meters. Thermal water at temperatures of around 70 °C is expected to be extracted from the boreholes. This will be fed into a heat exchanged, then injected back to the subsurface. The heat gained will then be supplied to the existing district heating network in combination with high-temperature heat pumps.

In early 2023, SWN received a grant notification from the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control for EUR 10 million to fund the geothermal heating project. This funding will account for about about 40% of the cost for the project that has an estimated budget of EUR 25.5 million.

“With the start of drilling, the decisive phase in the development of the hot deep water beneath Neuruppin begins. The colleagues at GTN value the cooperation with the Neuruppin municipal utility, a highly innovative municipal utility,” said Dr André Deinhardt, Managing Director of GTN.

“The official start of drilling work represents an important step towards a sustainable energy supply for the state of Brandenburg.
