Ecuador receives $7 million JICA grant for early work on Chachimbiro project

Ecuador secures $7 million grant from Japan International Cooperation Agency for a pre-feasibility of the Chachimbiro geothermal project.

In December we reported on a pre-feasibility study planned for the Chachimbiro geothermal project in Ecuador. Now the country has secured the necessary funding for the work.

With a grant of $7 million from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the launch for the detailed pre-feasibility study will be launched in April, as the Ecuadorian Ministry of Electricity announced earlier this week.

The geothermal field of Chachimbiro has an estimated potential of about 100 MW. The partnership with JICA also includes technical cooperation on the pre-feasibility study, including the first deep geothermal drilling. Earlier in 2015, Celec also signed a cooperation agreement with El Salvador’s LaGeo.

The project is located in Urcuqui, Imbabura province, the field will be explored by the Termopichincha unit of state-owned power company Corporacion Electrica del Ecuador (Celec).
