Education offered to Maasai affected by geothermal development in Kenya

Communities in the Narok and Nakuru counties will be the beneficiaries of a $7.5 million educational project for literacy and vocational skills

Maasai communities in the Narok and Nakuru counties in Kenya who were affected by geothermal exploration are set to receive a four-year literacy and vocational education. This project was announced following the government’s findings that the illiteracy levels at the identified areas was at about 42 percent.

The educational program will receive Sh780 million (around US $7.5 million) in funding, 63% of which will come from the Swedish International Development Agency while the rest will be provided by the Akiira Geothermal Company and the two counties.

The communities in Lapland and Suswa areas will be the main beneficiaries of the program. “Under this program, we shall embark on adult education, train youths on enterprises and vocational courses meant to empower them,” according to Jackson Obare of Forumsyd, the organization through which the funds will be channeled.

“We have embarked on the process of hiring another 300 trainers around Suswa and Lapland areas which have been affected by geothermal exploration,” added Obare.

In addition to having hired 25 trainers so far, Project national coordinator Isaac Keima has also enlisted some vocational colleges in the two counties to support the educational program.
