EEP starts production testing at Aluto Langano geothermal site in Ethiopia
Production testing has started on the four drilled wells of the expansion project for the Aluto Langano geothermal site in Ethiopia.
State-owned Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced that production testing has started for the drilled wells in the Aluto Langano geothermal site. Production testing of the four wells that have been drilled so far will take about three months with two-week intervals for each well.
Located on the Aluto volcanic complex in the Ethiopian Rift Valley, Aluto Langano is the only producing geothermal field in Ethiopia. The site has been producing geothermal power since 1990 but has been interrupted for expansion. The expansion project aims for additional generation of about 70 MW and has mostly been funded by the World Bank through the International Development Association (IDA).
Drilling in Aluto Langano has been carried out by KenGen as part of the company’s revenue diversification strategy. The fourth well in Aluto Langano is the seventh well that KenGen has drilled so far in Ethiopia, as we recently reported. A total of 12 wells are planned for the Aluto Langano expansion project.
During the same event, EEP also disclosed that energy export to Djibouti and Sudan will be cut to half starting the current week. This is to help sustain the local supply and keep up with increased demand in the holiday season.
