Empowering kids for a sustainable future: Unveiling the secrets of “Our Hidden Powers”
In this interview, the authors of “Our Hidden Powers” discuss the value of having empowering conversations with kids about sustainability and renewable energy.
About two months ago, we published a feature on “Our Hidden Powers” – a children’s book that tackles the topics of sustainability, climate change, and geothermal energy in a way that has not been done before by the geothermal industry. This was a wonderful initiative that ThinkGeoEnergy was all too happy to support, and this sentiment was echoed by more than a dozen other geothermal stakeholders.
To learn more about the inspiration and the lessons of “Our Hidden Powers,” we sat down with the book’s authors, Kristina Hagström-Ilievska and Gabriella Skog from Baseload Capital. In this interview, we discuss the importance of empowering children to learn about sustainability and what’s next for Ignis, the charming hero of this children’s book.

Congratulations on the launch of “Our Hidden Powers.” It is unique both as a children’s book and as a communication tool for the geothermal industry. What was the inspiration for writing this book?
“When I started at Baseload Capital 3 years ago, my son asked me to explain geothermal. I realized this was quite difficult to do in a fun way. I looked for appropriate books everywhere, in libraries, on the internet and even in museums, but without any luck. The decision was easy. We needed to write one ourselves.” – Kristina
“We know that children have a lot of knowledge today about general sustainability, such as recycling and acting responsible in the nature, but we had a hard time finding good information about renewable energy, and nothing on geothermal. This book was written as a fun way to introduce energy that is good for our planet to our youngest, they really shouldn’t be left out from the discussion” – Gabriella
Sustainability and climate change can be touchy topics, even for adults. What was your approach in making the message of sustainability engaging even for young readers?
“The book is centered around an exciting story about the immense natural forces of the earth. Our characters – Ignis, Windy, Kai, Sunny and Terry, teaches children how working together can really make an impact for a better world. We don’t think children should be underestimated, but rather invited to open and honest discussions about the climate. That way, we can empower them to be responsible stewards of the environment.” – Gabriella
Children’s books are timeless when they impart values and lessons that even adults can learn from. How can this book also help us adults discover our “hidden powers?”
“Everyone is value driven, but our power multiplies if we can find a greater connection to passion. We believe that the study questions in the end of the book will give both adults and children new insights about themselves. But only if you have an honest and genuine conversation together with the child. We all need to stop and reflect more often. If we all did, I am certain that the world would be a better place. “ – Kristina
How does the message of “Our Hidden Powers” align with the business strategy of Baseload Capital?
“We at Baseload Capital are convinced that we need to collaborate to achieve a planet in balance. We even have collaboration in our mission because we strongly believe that we need support from each other in order to succeed. Not only within the geothermal industry, but together with the whole renewable sector.” – Kristina
Ignis is a very charming mascot for the geothermal industry, and it would be great if this is not the character’s one-time appearance. Is there any chance that we will see Ignis in other stories in the future?
“Of course, there is! In addition to the English and Swedish editions, “Our Hidden Powers” is currently being translated to Chinese, Icelandic and Italian – and we are hoping to have more. If you are interested, please contact us! In addition to that, we are also looking into book number two where Ignis and her friends will take us on another great adventure.” – Gabriella
“Our hope is that this is something that the whole industry feels inclined to use and to work with. Why not bring Ignis to your work and let her answer the questions about geothermal to all your employees’ kids? The story of Ignis will stay alive only with you, so if you have a place Ignis should visit, let’s set a date!” – Kristina
