EU-funded GEOTHERMICA Project receives 35 applications

European Union funded GEOTHERMICA Geothermal Energy Research Project receives 35 applications from 11 countries.

Earlier this month, the GEOTHERMICA Geothermal Energy Project reported that it had received 35 applications from 11 countries for a call for funding which ran out July 10, 2017.

GEOTHERMICA is a European Union co-operation project with 16 administrative and research centers in 13 countries in Europe. The project is managed by Iceland’s National Energy Authority (Orkustofnun) with Icelandic research institution RANNÍS providing support..

The project is funded with contributions from each participating country, as well as contributions from the European Union Research Fund, Horizon 2020. Emphasis is placed on increased cooperation between researchers and industry in individual areas, as well as promoting increased synergies across countries.

The objective of the program is to support and accelerate the development of geothermal utilization within the participating countries. To achieve the goals of the project, EUR 32 million, or 3.5 billion Icelandic krónur, will be devoted to support the development and development of geothermal energy.

The goal of GEOTHERMICA is also to share research funds from participating countries, on the one hand, and from the EU on research and innovation in the field of geothermal energy, as well as strengthening cooperation, networking and business relations within the geothermal sector in Europe. The intention is to establish long-term and strategic partnerships among those who provide funding in geothermal research and innovation.

Number of applications in this first auction GEOTHERMICA shows increasing interest in the development of geothermal utilization, as applications were received from 11 countries, widely across Europe. These are so-called forums, where the evaluation process consists of two parts. In total, these applicants wish for more than EUR 76 million in their collaborative projects. GEOTHERMICA co-operation is an important step in funding innovative and technological development projects in the field of geothermal energy and is a continuation of the ERA NET project, which ended in 2016.

The applications are, among other things, classified according to the country of origin. Most applications with the main applicant come from the Netherlands, or 7, but when viewed in general, the participation is mostly from Germany. See the attached figure. There are 15 major innovation and technology development projects that request more than 57 million euros and 20 smaller projects requiring more than 18 million euros.

These forums will be evaluated this summer, with the aim of offering selected candidates to continue in the second round no later than September 11, 2017. The deadline for submission of a valid application is November 24, 2017. The goal is to The results of these first projects will be available in 2021.
