Exploration drilling for Blawan-Ijen geothermal project to start March 2020

PT Medco Power Indonesia and Ormat are planning to start exploration drilling for the 110 MW Blawan Ijen geothermal project in East Java, Indonesia as early as March 2020.

PT Medco Power Indonesia through its subsidiary Medco Cahaya Geothermal is now preparing an exploration drilling campaign for the Blawan-Ijen geothermal project in East Java, Indonesia. Drilling will be carried out in March 2020 and is targeted for completion in the third quarter of 2020.

The Blawan Ijen geothermal project targets the development of a 110 MW geothermal power plant with a targeted start of commercial operation in 2024. The Blawan Ijen geothermal working area (WKP) covers Bondowoso Regency, Banyuwangi Regency, and Situbondo Regency.

Utilization of geothermal energy in Blawan-Ijen WKP is carried out by Medco in collaboration with its partner in Sarulla geothermal project, Ormat Geothermal.

For this purpose, Medco Power has sold 49 percent of its shares in Medco Cahaya Energy to Ormat.

Isaac Angel, Chief Executive Officer of Ormat Group’s parent company said his company has built a trusted relationship and partnership with Medco in the Sarulla geothermal project in North Sumatra. This collaboration continues now in the Ijen geothermal development.

In the Blawa Ijen geothermal project, Ormat will supply funding and various equipment needed, while Medco will operate and manage the plant.
