Feasibility studies for Despoblados project in Argentina to be finalized this year

The Despoblados geothermal project of the JV with Barrick Gold, local utility EPSE and Geotermia Andina in Argentina is planning to finalize feasibility studies this year.

The joint venture of Barrick Gold, local power utility EPSE and Geotermia Andina has announced plans to finalize the work on feasibility studies for a 20 MW geothermal project planned for the Despoblados area of the Valle del Cura valley in Argentina.

The project is likely to sign a power purchase agreement with the gold mine operations at Veladero of Barrick Gold, about 12 km from the planned project site. With 17 MW of power requirements, powered currently by diesel, it requires about 30 million litres to be trucked into the mine.

There are further five potential geothermal sites that Barrick is eyeing to possibly power its $8.5 bilion Pascua Lama gold-silver project on the Chilean Argentinian border.
