Food security with increasing attention – an opportunity for geothermal

In an article on the school website, Professor Jasmin Raymond of Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS) in Quebec, Canada looks into how the ongoing pandemic highlights the importance of food supply security.
He discusses this issue in the context of his home province of Quebec and the province’s reliance on importing fruits and vegetables. Needing to become more self sufficient, local greenhouse production will have to be increased particularly during winter times.
That – so the article – is an opportunity for the utilization of Quebec’s geothermal resources. He describes that in order to grow vegetables and fruits year-round, electricity generated by hydropower alone will not be sufficient for heating those greenhouses during winter times. The capacity required would simply be too much. Today, the greenhouses are mostly heated by natural gas.
Geothermal energy from aquifers could help replace natural gas and electric heating.
