French group planning development of up to 4 geothermal projects in Serbia

French group IEL OIE Balkan Renewable Energy plans development of up to four geothermal projects in Serbia with a focus on feeding local district heating systems.

As part of an announcement of a planned wind farm near Kikinda in Serbia, French company IEL OIE Balkan Renewable Energy also announced plans for a geothermal power plant next year, as reported by Energy Observer.

Natasa Lazarevic, director of the company IEL OIE Balkan Renewable Energy, stated that they also intend to invest EUR 120 million euros in the Bashaid wind farm with the French company Aquo Energy Central Europe. The procedure related to the study on environmental impact assessment is underway.

Further, she pointed out that the company has also been working on a geothermal energy project for two years. French giant EDF has been participating in the proejct. Feasibility studies for the construction of geothermal power plants for Vranje, Subotica, Kikinda and Ruma have been conducted.

The research of geothermal potential is conducted in cooperation with the Provincial Secretariat for Energy, Construction and Transport, which is why a working group was established. Feasibility studies for the construction of geothermal plants for Vranje, Subotica, Kikinda and Ruma have been conducted. It is about the production of thermal energy for the district heating system and the economy.

We will choose one of the mentioned locations as a pilot project and we expect the construction of the first geothermal plant to start next year, Lazarevic added.
