The Ministry of Environment and Energy in Greece (RIS) has modified the decision for the characterization of the geothermal field of local interest in the area of ??Aristinos, Alexandroupolis. We previously reported on development efforts in the region.
The city of Alexandroupolis is located in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It is an important port and commercial center of northeastern Greece near the Turkish border.
Based on the new decision of RIS, signed by the head of the General Directorate of Mineral Raw Materials Dr. Petros Tzeferis, the temperature of a geothermal reservoir in the Geothermal Field of Local Interest of the Aristinos Alexandroupolis area (formerly certified low temperature geothermal field of the Aristinos Alexandroupolis area) is set at 30-99 degrees C.
It is reminded that in Aristino, Alexandroupolis, there is a certified low-enthalpy geothermal field of 20,000 acres, which has been leased by the Municipality from the Greek State for 70 years.
The utilization of geothermal energy in the area of ??Alexandroupolis has already been developed to a significant degree, operating largely as a pilot for similar projects in other parts of the country.
Specifically, by the end of 2021, a large project is expected to operate for the utilization of the geothermal field in Aristino for urban and rural district heating with geothermal, with the total length of the district heating network reaching 18 km.
The “green light” to get ahead of this pioneering project was given by the Council of State at the end of 2019. The project is implemented by the Municipality of Alexandroupolis and has a budget of EUR 6.2 million.
The formulation of terms and conditions for the lease of geothermal fields and the execution of related projects is expected to give a big impetus to geothermal projects, with the investment interest already concentrated in various cases.
In recent years, positive initiatives have been recorded in relation to the use of low temperature geothermal for the operation of greenhouse installations.
Today, apart from Alexandroupolis, two other important geothermal fields in Northern Greece are leased by municipal authorities: the Akropotamos geothermal field of the municipality of Paggaio and the Eratinos geothermal field in the Municipality of Nestos.
There is also interest in leasing areas and exploring deep geothermal systems with intermediate temperatures of 120-150 degrees C, as well as in the construction of geothermal power plants.
