Geo Dipa signs MOU to explore geothermal heat supply for tea processing in Indonesia

Geothermal developer and operator PT Geo Dipa Energi (Geo Dipa) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-owned agribusiness company PT Perkebunan Nusantara I (PTPN I) to explore the direct use of geothermal energy for the tea drying process. The MoU was signed during the recently held 12th Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The two companies will conduct joint technical studies and testing in the Patuha geothermal site operated by Geo Dipa. The study aims to develop technical, economic, risk, and cooperation models for the use of geothermal energy for tea processing.

“Drying tea using geothermal energy is an innovation and a new model for adapting to environmental changes. Renewable energy, such as geothermal energy, is increasingly relevant for reducing dependence on fossil fuels and wood fuel,” commented PTPN I President Director Abdul Rivai Ras.

Rivai further adds that the use of geothermal energy will not only increase productivity, but will also change the production process and optimize assets being used in tea production.

For Geo Dipa, the partnership represents a step towards deriving more value and diversifying revenue streams from geothermal energy production through direct use schemes. It is also uses geothermal energy as a tool to provide benefits to communities and the agricultural sector by empowering local industries. Earlier this year, the company had entered into an agreement with PT Danareksa to explore the potential for the use of geothermal energy for industrial applications, with a pilot project planned at a Special Economic Zone in Central Java.
