Geological agency identifies 6 new geothermal resource areas in Indonesia

Reporting on survey results on potential additional geothermal resource areas, ESDM reports it has identified 6 new areas. It is now proposing the determination of three new geothermal working areas.

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recently held a virtual press conference reporting on its 2020 Performance Achievement and the work plan for 2021.

In 2020, the agency conducted a survey and investigation in order to identify the existence and geothermal resources in Indonesia. Eko Budi Lelono, Head of the Geological Agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said that there were 6 survey locations, starting from Aloe Calong in Aceh, Ciamis in West Java, Panulisan in Central Java, Nagekeo in East Nusa Tenggara, Sulili in South Sulawesi, and Pinamula in Central Sulawesi.

“There are 6 survey locations ranging from Sumatra to South Sulawesi. In the future, we will continue with several locations. At least there are 3 locations that we will do to prove the truth of geothermal energy,” he said in the meeting. He said, there were proposals for 3 geothermal working areas consisting of Limbong (12 MWe) in North Luwu, South Sulawesi. Then Sajau (6 MWe) in Bulungan, North Kalimantan and Banda Baru (9 MWe) in Seram, Maluku.

The 4 evaluation prospects are located in Aceh, Lampung, West Java, and North Sulawesi. In evaluation prospects are used to evaluate previous data through evaluation of prospects, economics, including the disaster aspect use area for proposed geothermal areas.

“We are also updating geothermal data and reserves until the status of November 2020. The total resources are 23,892.5 MWe with an installed capacity of 2,130.7 MWe. The number of locations is 355 points. This can still be updated because the data is not final. “he said.
