Geothermal drilling by Aardwarmte Wippolderlaan in the Netherlands completed

Drilling of two wells for geothermal heat supply has been completed by Aardwarmte Wippolderlaan as the project proceeds to the surface design phase.

The two geothermal wells of Aardwarmte Wippolderlaan at Wateringen, Netherlands have been drilled and extensively tested, confirming the ideal conditions of the reservoir for geothermal heat supply. Drilling of the wells started in June 2026. The project will now proceed to the design of surface facilities as the project seeks to start supply of geothermal heat to homes and businesses in the region by mid-2028.

Both production and reinjection wells were drilled targeting the Delft Sandstone to depths of about 2350 meters.  A temperature of 85 ºC was measured at the depth of the reservoir. The wells were drilled directionally and are ultimately located approximately one kilometer apart.

“We reached exactly the predetermined target coordinates during drilling,” said Bert Jan Koers, Drilling Manager at HVC. “That is a nice confirmation that our preparations, calculations, and execution aligned well.”

The data from the testing phase will inform the design phase of the surface facilities. Construction and installation will then follow. Such facilities will include the pipes, pumps, filters, and heat exchangers that will facilitate the transfer of heat from the deep subsurface to the heating network.

Along with development at Alton, Wippolderlaan represents the next set of geothermal project by HVC following Trias Westland, Aardwarmte Maasdijk, and Aardwarmte Polanen. HVC currently operates 18 geothermal wells supplying approximately 15 MWth of sustainable heat, comparable to the heat consumption of a major Dutch city.
