Geothermal expansion planned in community outside of Paris, France
The municipality of Taverny, just outside of Paris, is planning to expand its geothermal heating network
Municipality of Taverny, in the Northwestern suburbs of the French capital Paris in France has announced the renewal of its contract with company Idex for the operation of heating in the Red Cross district. Geothermal energy is at the core of this contract, as reported by La gazette Val d’Oise.
By decision of the municipal council of June 24, the City of Taverny (Val-d’Oise) renewed its confidence in Idex for the realization of a new geothermal energy and the operation of the heating network in the district of Croix- Rouge, located around the Jean-Bouin stadium, rue Pierre-de-Coubertin.
According to Idex, the new 15-year contract should make it possible to develop, a “more virtuous” network with “controlled” energy consumption.
A “virtuous” energy
Created in the 1970s, at the same time as the Red Cross district, the network was historically supplied by oil . In 2008, the site was renovated to switch to natural gas and since 2016, the purchase of biomethane has provided subscribers with a 5.5% VAT on the entire energy bill.

“The city of Taverny is thus continuing its energy transition with local and renewable energy: geothermal energy”, welcomes Idex, which speaks of an energy naturally present in the subsoil of the Ile-de-France region, “which emits very little greenhouse gas. “And which, coupled with a heat pump, would offer” interesting performance “.
Important work
In order to make the installations compatible with this new energy, Idex will carry out major work in the substations. Test drilling will take place shortly to determine the technical characteristics of the production and reinjection wells.
27% geothermal energy to supply the network in 2022
From 2022, the network will therefore be supplied up to 27% by geothermal energy, with an additional 34% by biomethane. The additional needs will be met thanks to the current gas production which will have been modernized.
Ademe grants
“While today, the Taverny heating network provides thermal comfort to more than 1,250 housing equivalents in the Red Cross district for their heating and domestic hot water needs, the contract provides for an extension of the network with the connection of gymnasiums and Jean-Bouin stadium ”, underlines Idex, which must benefit from subsidies from Ademe (Agency for the Environment and Energy Management).
Crowdfunding campaign
A crowdfunding campaign will also be launched with the City so that residents are “the first players in this local and virtuous economy”.
