Geothermal has become a significant point of reference for tourism in Tuscany

Drawing more than 60,000 visitors, geothermal energy has become a significant point of reference for national and international tourism in the Tuscany region in Italy.

With Tuscany being a popular tourist location, it is actually positive to hear that not only the natural and architectural wonders of the region draws tourists, but also the geothermal features of the region.

In a recent article in local news, it is reported that it is crucial for geothermal plants that they fit in the surrounding landscape and to promote sustainable development in the region, without distorting the identity of the landscape and culture. This is a difficult challenge, but one that can be overcome as recent data from Tuscan’s Tourism authority shows.

According to data provided by the Center for Tourism Studies (CST) in Florence, there were 120,000 tourist within the six geothermal municipalities involved in the Tuscany – Steam Hills tourist guide recorded in 2016, and a considerable part of these tourists chose to go to this piece of Tuscany just to discover the wonders of geothermal energy, industrially used for the first time in the world in Tuscany. So much so that the data (updated to 2017) released to date by Enel Green Power witness the arrival of over 60,000 tourists in the landmarks of the Tuscan geothermal energy utilisation, confirming the record already marked in 2016 of 60,500 tourists .

In particular, the Larderello Geothermal Museum (in the Municipality of Pomarance) registered about 27,000 visits, while the Biancane Park in the municipal territory of Monterotondo Marittimo registered over 17,000 visits. Approximately 6,000 visitors accessed the Park of the Fumaroles of Sasso Pisano, in the municipality of Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, to the natural events of San Federigo and others spread throughout the territory, to the geothermal trekking route connecting the Fumaroles to the Biancane, to which are added 10,000 attendees of the 2017 Open Center and of the summer events promoted by Enel Green Power and institutions in the traditional area of Larderello, Monterotondo Marittimo, Castelnuovo VdC and Monteverdi Marittimo or in the areas of Radicondoli, Chiusdino, Montieri, and Monte Amiata Grosseto (Piancastagnaio,

“Geothermal tourism – commented Massimo Montemaggi, Enel Green Power’s geothermal manager – is now an important part of the Tuscan geothermal district: it is a possible result thanks to the collaboration between Enel Green Power, CoSviG (the Consortium for the development of the areas geothermal), Tuscany Region, Municipal Administrations, Renewable Energy Food Community, Museum of the Energies of the Radicondoli Territory, Visitor Center of the Biancane Park of Monterotondo Marittimo, Pro loco, associations and tourist offices of the traditional geothermal territories and of the Amiata. All have worked hard on the promotion and care of tour itineraries, making geothermal sites a point of reference for national and international tourism “.
