Geothermal heating project in Bad Bevensen, Germany secures federal funding

The geothermal heating project in Bad Bevensen, Germany by NULLCOZWEI will be receiving EUR 200,000 of federal funding to support the exploration phase.

Berlin-based NULLCOZWEI GmbH has secured a commitment of EUR 200,000 of federal funding to support the planned geothermal heating project in Bad Bevensen, Germany. This funding will go towards the exploration phase of the project, which aims to tap geothermal waters at 3400 meters depth for district heating supply by 2029.

The initial proposal for the geothermal heating project in Bad Bevensen was for it to be developed under municipal ownership, but the project was ultimately struck down by the city council in 2025. After several months, the project was revived through the involvement of private firm NULLCOZWEI. The most recent update from the project indicates that plans for drilling have been made and that the company will commence seismic surveys soon as part of exploration.

The city of Bad Bevensen had initially estimated total costs of EUR 25.6 million, although Managing Director Steffen Krause says a new estimate may now be necessary. The plan would be to drill two wells and build a geothermal heating plant in the Sandschellen area, ideally within the city to reduce heat losses during distribution. The city is still evaluating if this would be possible under building regulations.

The city had already received a commitment from the state of Lower Saxony for a conditionally repayable grant that cover the risk of the first drilling operation. However, NULLCOZWEI must also secure coverage from a private reinsurer. For the construction of heating pipelines, the company is also counting on funding from the federal funding for efficient heating networks, which could cover up to 40% of costs. Utility company Celle-Uelzen-Netz GmbH will be handling the construction, operation, and marketing of the district heating system.
