Geothermal lagoon planned in Quebec, Canada
A private developer in Quebec is planning to put up an “Iceland-style” geothermal lagoon as part of a housing development for short-term rentals.
A geothermal lagoon fashioned after similar lagoons in Iceland is being planned to be built in Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, a small town in Quebec, Canada. A combination of geothermal, solar, and biomass energy will be used to maintain the lagoon at a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius. Construction for this lagoon is expected to start by winter 2023.
The geothermal lagoon, dubbed GeoLAGON, will be part of two housing developments named the Soleils Village and Lagon Village. This project is being spearheaded by developer and former Villages Vacances Valcartier and Calypso Park president Louis Massicotte. The developer is expecting $300 million in private investments to go towards the development of both the lagoon and the housing projects.
Massicotte also highlighted the proximity of the planned project in Petite-Rivière-Saint-François to other popular tourist destinations including Canada’s first Club Med Resort, the Massif de Charlevoix, and Baie-Saint-Paul. He also claimed that the members of the Petite-Rivière-Saint-François municipal council were “delighted” by the proposal.
