Geothermal potential being surveyed in American Samoa

The first exploration phase has been concluded by the American Samoa Power Authority in western part of the main island, Tutuila. Sensors are in place and results will soon follow.

In the summer of 2013, it was announced that American Samoa will be starting drilling in 2014, see ThinkGeoEnergy. It is now reported that the country has finished preliminary studies with aerial surveys, geological mapping and water and soil analysis have identified an area of potential geothermal development on the western part of Tutuila according to Radio New Zealand International.

Now heat sensors are being placed on around 100 locations to measure the geophysical characteristics at over one mile deep as stated by the same sources.

The American Samoa consists of 5 main islands and 2 coral atolls. The largest and most populous island is Tutuila, with the Manu?a Islands, Rose Atoll, and Swains Island also included in the territory. American Samoa is part of the Samoan Islands chain, located west of the Cook Islands, north of Tonga, and some 300 miles (500 km) south of Tokelau.
