Geothermal power generation capacity at 12,000 MW worldwide

Last year, geothermal power electricity-generating capacity grew 3 percent to top 11,700 megawatts across 24 countries, despite the economic crisis; establishing geothermal as a real contender in the green power race.

In an article posted in EVWind by J. Matthew Roney, despite the relative elevated costs of drilling and exploration for geothermal energy, the power generated by this industry is reaching new heights. According to the article, “In 2013, world geothermal power electricity-generating capacity grew 3 percent to top 11,700 megawatts across 24 countries.”

The report goes further listing the benefits and advantages of geothermal versus other renwables such as its 24/7 availability, acting as a baseload source. In the same article, “the top three countries in installed geothermal power capacity—the United States, the Philippines, and Indonesia—account for more than half the world total. California hosts nearly 80 percent of the 3,440 megawatts of U.S. geothermal capacity; another 16 percent is found in Nevada.”

The US may be leading but, thanks to a recent change in legislation in Indonesia, it might start leading in this particular field in the near future, accounting for the growing need for electricity and power.
