Geothermal power project at Eden Project in Cornwall seeking local funding

Cornwall-based EGS Energy is seeking funding from Cornwall Council to help match possible funding through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for a geothermal power project near the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Reported locally, the group seeking to develop a geothermal power plant near the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK is seeking funding of GBP 1.4 million from the Cornwall Council, as reported by Private FM. The funding will be decided by the council’s Cabinet to match funding through the council’s business, energy and industrial strategy grant fund.

In a similar effort the Cornwall Council has provided funding of GBP 2.4 million for the GBP 18 million United Downs Deep Geothermal Project that is kicking off right now. Funding from Cornwall has helped the developer to secure GBP 10.6 million from  the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The Eden scheme is the second to come forward and has been invited to make a full application for money from the ERDF and needs the match funding from the counci to support that application.

The project is led by EGS Energy, based in Cornwall which has a planning permission for a geothermal plant with a capacity of 3-4 MW at the Eden Project a popular visitor attraction in Cornwall, England, UK. The Eden Project is a dramatic global garden housed in tropical biomes that nestle in a crater the size of 30 football pitches.  Inside the two bio domes are plants that are collected from many diverse climates and environments. .

The planned geothermal power plant could produce sufficient power for the Eden Project and around 4,000 homes.

Planned as an EGS plant, it would use a two-well system, where cold water is pumped down one hole and picks up the heated water from the other.
