Geothermal to power green hydrogen production in Australia

Using a combination of natural gas and geothermal energy, Strike aims to produce green hydrogen for competitive low-carbon urea fertilizer

Strike Energy is planning to produce green hydrogen from their urea fertilizer production facility in Western Australia using a 10 MW electrolyser powered by geothermal energy. This can potentially produce enough green hydrogen to supply 2% of the hydrogen feedstock needed by the urea fertilizer plant.

We have previously reported on the efforts of Strike Energy to locate geothermal resources in the Perth Basin. Using geothermal heat for high-temperature electrolysis for green hydrogen production is only one of many income streams that the company expects from geothermal development. As of the last report, Strike Energy is on-track to come up with an Inferred Resource by the end of 2021.

Geothermal energy will be combined with Strike’s natural gas reserves to produce possibly the lowest carbon urea fertilizer in the market. This will be supplied competitively to Australian farmers and reduce the need for imports.

The project to develop low-carbon fertilizer is being done in collaboration with engineering outfit ATCO. Infinite Blue Energy, a green hydrogen specialist, is also on-hand to assist with key infrastructure and green hydrogen offtake.
