In conjunction with the 6th European Geothermal Workshop (EGW) in Strasbourg/ France, the Geothermal-Alliance Bavaria will hold its Autumn School on the topic of Enhanced/ Engineered Geothermal Systems (EGS), 7-9 October 2018 in Strasbourg. The event is co-funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Arts and the MSE Graduate Center of the Munich School of Engineering (MSE).

The Autumn School addresses geoscientists and engineers alike who are interested in learning more about the use of deep geothermal energy. The different topics are presented in a 1-hour talk each, followed by 30 minutes of interaction. At the end of each day, participants will form groups, each presenting the most relevant information from one topic of the day in a 15 – 20 minute wrap-up talk. The wrap-up presentations will be part of the Autumn School handout, which will be given to each participant in the end. The Autumn School is organized by the Geothermal-Alliance Bavaria (GAB) and co-funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Arts and the MSE Graduate Center of the Munich School of Engineering (MSE). The event is associated with the 6th European Geothermal Workshop (EGW). Participants are strongly encouraged to take part in both events.

Date: 7-9 October 2018

Why focus on EGS?

Despite abundant resources, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are still not widely used on an industrial scale in Europe. Research activities in the field, however, combined with an ever-growing number of installed production sites worldwide, lead to significant technical advances in the recent years. With growing knowledge arises the need for improved education measures in the field of EGS. It is the aim of the 1st GAB Autumn School on EGS to provide PhD students from the fields of geo- and engineering sciences with a strong interest in geothermal energy research with not only the most relevant technical knowledge, but also with a toolkit for risk assessment and communication in order to raise public acceptance of the technology.

About the Geothermal-Alliance Bavaria:

Funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Arts and coordinated by the MSE, three major universities in Bavaria joined forces in the Geothermal-Alliance Bavaria: The Technical University of Munich, the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and the University of Bayreuth. The aim of the project is to push research in the field of geothermal energy on a variety of scientific fields, such as geology, chemistry, thermal process engineering and electrical engineering with the ultimate goal of strengthening the use of deep geothermal energy as a domestic energy source.
