Global geothermal capacity reaches 14,369 MW – Top 10 Geothermal Countries, Oct 2018

The global installed geothermal power generation capacity has reached 14,369 MW with the addition of new plants in Turkey and New Zealand. Therefore we updated our Top 10 List of countries with geothermal power plant, in which New Zealand has joined the 1 GW Geothermal Countries Club.

With the recent addition of geothermal power plants in Turkey, the latest one announced today, and the start of commissioning of the new plant in New Zealand, we thought it timely to update our Top 10 list of countries with installed geothermal power generation capacity.

The total global capacity stands now at 14,369 MW. While the U.S. continues to be the largest geothermal country by far, the limited development activities sees countries such as Indonesia and Turkey catching most of the attention.

Alone the additions of plants this year in Indonesia, pushed the country ahead of the Philippines. Turkey continues its steady growth having now pushed itself to an installed capacity of 1,200 MW … keep in mind that the installed generation capacity of the country in 2008 stood at 30 MW … and the year is not over yet.

With the new plant in New Zealand, while still to officially start operation, the country has now broken into the group of countries with more than 1,000 MW (1 GW) of installed geothermal power generation capacity, the 1 GW Geothermal Countries Club.
