Government exploration of geothermal field Cisolok-Cisukarame, West Java to start mid-2021

Indonesia’s Ministry for Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) plans to start exploration drilling at the Cisolok Cisukarame geothermal working area in West Java in 2021. This is done in an effort to derisk the project to attract investors for full fledged development of the field.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) will conduct geothermal exploration drilling in the Cisolok-Cisukarame area, Sukabumi, West Java, next year.

The WKP Cisolok Cisukarame covers an area of ??15,580 hectares, administratively located in Cisolok Village, Cisolok District, Sukabumi Regency. Land uses that are developing are protected forests, plantations (PTPN VIII), limited production forests, and other use areas.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources team consisting of the ESDM Research and Development Agency, the Geological Agency and the Directorate General of EBTKE have discussed the work program for the geothermal exploration plan in the geothermal working area with the Sukabumi Regency Government.

The Head of the Center for Coal and Geothermal Mineral Resources Iman Sinulingga explained that this program was a follow-up to government drilling efforts to reduce the risk of geothermal exploration. The scheme is to conduct exploration in an effort to attract more investors. The government will be taking ov the risk factor, thereby reducing the selling price of geothermal electricity.

“The risks of geothermal development in the upstream area that have been borne by investors are now the responsibility of the government,” said Iman, in a press release on Friday, August 14, 2020.

As a first step, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources team synergized to prepare infrastructure and permits for the exploration drilling of the Cisolok Cisukarame WKP, which is planned to start in mid-2021. This activity is expected to provide a multilayer effect for local governments, communities and related stakeholders.

Sukabumi Regent Marwan Hamami welcomes the ESDM Ministry team’s plan to continue geothermal development so that Sukabumi has an additional supply of energy sources in the future.

Marwan emphasized that the Sukabumi Regional Government is ready to support all permits needed to accelerate this activity. Sukarame Village is surrounded by indigenous people who are willing to cooperate well.

“Accelerating geothermal development can contribute to developing the southern coastal area of ??Sukabumi Regency,” said Marwan.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources team led by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Expert for Geothermal Governance Eben Siahaan, Geothermal Director Ida Nuryatin Finahari and Head of P3TK EBTKE Chrisnawan Anditya have also discussed this plan as well as reviewing the preparation of using the PPPTMGB “LEMIGAS” mobile rig as a drilling tool.
