Great local economic impact by Enel Green Power geothermal activities in Tuscany, Italy

A recent meeting between the Enel Green Power’s geothermal group and over 40 companies operating in the geothermal sector in Tuscany/ Italy discussed the economic impact and opportunities of geothermal energy in the region and beyond.

This week a meeting between the Enel Green Power’s geothermal group and over 40 companies operating in the geothermal sector took place at the headquarters of the Industrial Union of Pisa, as part of the process of collaboration started some years ago by Enel Green Power in collaboration with the institutions, the Co.Svi.G. (Consortium for the Development of Geothermal Areas), trade associations and the entrepreneurial fabric for the promotion of initiatives aimed at maximizing the socio-economic and occupational repercussions in favor of the businesses of the Municipalities where a geothermal plant is located. This was reported by QuiNews Volterra.

This is seen as an important step, because it was organized in collaboration with the sections Innovation and Enterprise 4.0 and the Environment and Energy of the Industrial Union of Pisa – represented by the respective managers Dario Masoni and Fabrizio Vitale – which has taken action to promote moments of deepening and of constant monitoring for the development of the geothermal region. The manager of the geothermal plants Francesco Lazzeri , the purchasing department manager Enel Green Power, the geothermal area, Marco Cammelli and the institutional affairs representative, Enel Toscana, Emiliano Maratea, were present for Enel Green Power .

Enel Green Power has presented the data of recent years, both as regards the contracts for the operation and maintenance of the plants and as regards the development activities, such as smart re-powering of existing wells, construction of new wells, efficiency operations and technological innovation. “Overall, the territorial impacts will amount to over EUR 70 million (USD 78 million) per year also for 2019 and 2020 – said Enel Green Power – in a context in which the total annual expenditure for plant management is stable over the years.

In addition to the geothermal sector, where Enel Green Power carried out important work of company specialization and transfer of know-how, the ever-increasing opportunity for local companies to collaborate in other business contexts of the business emerged both in the national and international context. A perspective that some companies have already begun to turn into reality with an important process of internationalization and growth from a technical and organizational point of view. With regard to geothermal energy, the main areas of activity that exist, on which there may be further margins for development, are operations relating to industrial maintenance and services.

Enel Green Power then confirmed its commitment to support companies in technical training and safety, also in collaboration with CoSviG, as well as in exploring new activities to increase the impact in economic and employment terms. All in compliance with existing regulations and total transparency, so as to maximize the “zero kilometre” formula in terms of general services with the aim of also reducing the environmental impact and optimizing the involvement of local businesses, compatibly with the Enel Green Power procedures. In this regard, 8 cases of local companies were presented, that won as many competitions where previously there was no chance. Finally, an in-depth analysis dedicated to the inclusion in the tenders of technical and sustainability evaluation elements, which will flank the aspect of the economic offer, with benefits both from the environmental point of view and from the technological growth of the companies, as well as the aspect of the social clause that will allow to give the maximum guarantee to the local personnel, independently from the company that will win the tender.

“The discussions between Unione Industriali, Enel Green Power and the representatives of the companies present – said the president of the Union, Patrizia Alma Pacini- was constructive and open, in a climate of mutual collaboration which, regardless of the possibilities of developing geothermal energy in the Tuscan territory, will continue to enhance the local geothermal region. All the subjects will monitor the development of the activities in the coming months and then reconvene the discussions and take stock of the situation. As an Industrial Union we have closely followed the “issue” of geothermal energy, in collaboration with Confindustria Toscana, Enel, and related industries. Geothermal energy is a natural wealth that we have in our territory and as such must be valued, few know it and do not actually understand the value. We consider this technical meeting carried out by the Industrial Union, among entrepreneurs, a moment of open communication and growth, in which interesting points of reflection emerged between Enel and companies in the supply chain. Positive notes that emerged are certainly the introduction of the “short supply chain” and the high specialization that companies have acquired in the field of geothermal energy. High specialization is a factor of competitiveness both for supplier companies and for Enel, which has emphasized the ‘importance for collaboration not only in the geothermal field or in the geothermal field but not only in Tuscany ”.

At Larderello and in Tuscany Enel Green Power manages the oldest geothermal complex in the world, which has 34 geothermal power stations, located between the provinces of Pisa, Siena and Grosseto. The more than 6 billion KWh produced in Tuscany, in addition to satisfying more than 30 percent of the regional energy needs, provide useful heat to heat more than 10 thousand residential users, about 30 hectares of greenhouses and companies in the food chain, floriculture, of the handicrafts and leather goods.
