Hybrid geothermal + biogas industrial heating system starts operations in Shandong, China

A hybrid system in Shandong Province, China uses geothermal energy to reduce gas combustion for superheated steam supply in industrial heating applications.

The Jidong Oilfield Company (Jidong Oilfield) has started operations of a hybrid geothermal and biogas facility in Dongying City, Shandong Province, China. By using geothermal to pre-heat the boiler feedwater, the system helps gas consumption to supply the superheated steam needed for industrial applications at the Dongying Economic Development Zone.

The “Geothermal + Biogas” industrial steam production project is a green energy coupling demonstration project by Jidong Oilfield. Geothermal waters from medium depth is used to pre-heat the boiler feedwater, which is then heated by biogas combustion to produce superheated steam at 1.6 MPa and 250 ºC. The facility supports a steam supply capacity of 74 tons per hour and an annual heat supply of 1.18 million GJ.

Through integration with geothermal energy, the hybrid project addresses the challenges faced by enterprises in the industrial park that rely on gas-fired boilers, yet have to contend with high steam costs and comply with environmental policies. The system helps to save 40,300 tons of standard coal and reduce CO2 emissions by 87,300 tons annually.

The “geothermal + biogas” project also presents a mature and reliable model for the use of green energy for industrial energy supply that can be promoted and replicated for large-scale applications in the field of industrial heating.

Earlier this year, a high-temperature geothermal resource was validated through a 4000-meter well in Dongying. This has paved the way for early studies on the use of geothermal energy for industrial heating or power generation.
