Hydrogen production to start at Hellisheidi geothermal power plant in Iceland

Icelandic geothermal power utility ON Power has announced it will start the experimental production of hydrogen at its Hellisheidi geothermal power plant, near Reykjavik in Iceland. The project is a European research project in collaboration with Icelandic companies Orkan and Iceland New Energy.

Reported locally, Icelandic geothermal power utility ON Power has announced that it will start the experimental production of hydrogen in the coming weeks. An electrolyte has been purchased and it is being installed in an area near the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant. It is expected that the sale to cars will begin in October.

The installation of the hydrogen station is part of a European research project that ON Power participates in with two other Icelandic companies; Orkan, owned by Skeljung (Icelandic gas station operator), and Icelandic New Energy. Orkan opened two hydrogen dispensers earlier this summer. For now imported hydrogen will be used until hydrogen will be started from the new station.

The production capacity of the electrolyte is high compared with the cars in use. Increased use is expected in the near future, including hydrogen-powered buses.
