Iceland Geothermal Cluster represented at upcoming WGC in Melbourne

Iceland Geothermal is a non-profit organization formally established in February 2013 around an industry-driven cluster initiative in the field of geothermal energy.  The main role of the Iceland Geothermal Cluster is to promote Iceland’s unique qualities as the land of geothermal energy and geothermal utilization.  In Iceland 2/3 of primary energy consumption is from geothermal energy, and 100% of primary energy in the country is renewable.

The purpose of the organization is to stimulate competitiveness within the Icelandic Geothermal Cluster, create value and new opportunities in the sector. Facilitate cooperation with exportation, and services related to the field of geothermal power generation as well as improve the utilization of Iceland’s geothermal energy. The organizations aims include, but are not limited to:

•          Promote Iceland as the home of geothermal
•          Promote existing businesses in the field of geothermal energy in Iceland
•          Support innovation with the aim of increasing number new of companies in the field.
•          Increase the number of products and services within geothermal
•          Increase domestic and foreign investments in the field of geothermal energy
•          Increase exports of goods and services in the field of geothermal energy
•          Promote the Iceland Geothermal Cluster infrastructure

Project Examples

The cluster cooperation is based on ten defined cooperative focus areas all of which aim to strengthen the infrastructure of the Icelandic geothermal cluster. Out of each focus area specific projects are establish. Here below a few ongoing project are listed, see below:

•          World Geothermal Conference 2020 – in association with IGC
•          Startup Energy Reykjavik – 14 new companies generated since 2014
•          Internships with Iceland School of Energy
•          Nicaragua Geothermal Power – Facilitate a platform to develop new power plants
•          Nicaragua Resource Park
•          Education Reform in connection to geothermal
•          Preservation of the history of geothermal application in Iceland
•          Data gathering – Key figures to estimate financial benefits of geothermal utilization
•          Energy security – Status report on geothermal energy resources
•          Iceland Geothermal Conference 2016 – Focus on business opportunities …

Pioneering the District Heating Revolution

District Heating Revolution has started. In it began in the mid- 18th century, it was not until 1930 that Reykjavík school became the city’s first building to be heated using geothermal water. Today Iceland homes, hospitals, schools and businesses are connected to hot springs and swimming pools have been built all around the country. Currently, over 90% of Iceland’s homes are connected to geothermal district heating systems and annual savings for using geothermal energy, rather than oil for heating of houses is of the order of 5% of GPD.

Who are your members?

Iceland Geothermal represents the geothermal sector in Iceland and has on average more than 50 members that to gather manage the geothermal resources of the country. Some of our members are active players in the development and utilization of geothermal energy outside the country. Icelandic companies take part in geothermal project in more than 50 counties around the globe.
