IGA invites help to develop global classification for geothermal resources
The IGA invites interested geothermal experts to define global geothermal standards and definitions. Individuals are invited to submit an Expression of Interest.
In September 2014, the International Geothermal Association (IGA) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a globally applicable harmonized standard for reporting geothermal resources (http://www.geothermal-energy.org/publications_and_services/news/article/iga-signs-an-mou-with-unece.html). Under this MoU, the IGA will work towards providing technology-specific rules (‘specifications’) for the application of the United Nations Framework for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources 2009 (UNFC) to geothermal resources. This work will be overseen by the UNECE Expert Group on Resource Classification.
The IGA is aware that many individuals and organizations around the world have an interest in this topic, and we are now seeking volunteers from those organizations and elsewhere to join a global working group to draft the geothermal specifications for the UNFC. The IGA anticipates that the working group might comprise up to ten individuals across a range of experience and expertise in the area of resources classification, to deliver draft Specifications for public review at the World Geothermal Congress in Melbourne, Australia, in April 2015.
To commence the process the IGA, with the support of the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) of the World Bank, is inviting relevant players in the geothermal sector to attend a workshop at the offices of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Bonn, Germany, on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th, December 2014. If you or someone from your organization would like to participate in the workshop or working group, please follow the directions indicated in the PDF file. We advise anyone who would require a visa to attend the workshop in Bonn to include with his or her application an accurate physical address as a contact point for delivery of a letter of invitation. Note that spaces are limited. Expressions of Interest to attend the workshop should include a CV and a short cover letter and shall be sent by email to Dr. Horst Rüter, cc to Dr. Graeme Beardsmore and Dr. Gioia Falcone.
