Indonesian government plans for geothermal development on Flores Island

The Indonesian government is working on plans to foster geothermal development on Flores Island in the Province of East Nusa Tenggara Province.

The Indonesian government has announced a push for geothermal development on Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara.

The island has an estimated geothermal reserves of 659 MW and about 745 MW of resources.

“The government is now preparing the establishment plan to help the development of its resources to make it Flores Geotheraml Island, “so Director of Geothermal Energy, Yunus Saefulhak in a local publication this week.

According to him, it is expected that the island could see the delivery of geothermal base-load power to the island by 2025.

With a government target of reaching 7,239 MW of geothermal power generation capacity in Indonesia in 2025, huge efforts are needed to achieve these targets. One of those efforts that are seen to be able to accelerate development would be the assignment of geothermal working areas for development to state-owned enterprises without a bidding process.

In addition, geothermal development should not be viewed as a business with a profit-sharing or bonus production only, but also the supply of electricity that helps meet the ever increasing energy demand.

“We see the electrification ratio in the area or inadequate electricity needs of society so that the economy in the area can run well,” he continued.

Earlier this year, we reported on the acquisition of the 30 MW Sokoria geothermal project by Chinese-Icelandic KS Orka.
