Infrastructure work has been completed in preparation of the drilling phase of the Mataloko geothermal project by PT PLN in Indonesia.

PT PLN (Persero), through PT PLN Nusa Tenggara Development Main Unit (Unit Induk Pembangunan Nusa Tenggara / UIP Nusra) has announced that it has completed 100% of the infrastructure preparation work for the Mataloko geothermal power project in Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. With this development, the project will soon be ready to progress to the drilling phase.

The completed infrastructure includes four wellpads (A, B, C, and D), a staging area, and 6.7 kilometers of access road. The work was carried out in Golewa District, including in the villages of Tiwotoda, Ulubelu, Wogo, Dadawea, Ratogesa, and Radabata.

An update given almost a year ago indicated that the infrastructure work had started, and that the developer is expecting drilling to start by 2026. As indicated by Adry A.S. Silaban, Head of Geothermal Engineering for the Mataloko Geothermal Working Area, PLN and its service providers are currently conducting inspection to ensure that the work meets quality standards, safety requirements, and technical specifications before moving on to the next phase.

PT PLN is planning for a 2×10 MW development in the Mataloko site, having been assigned the Geothermal Working Area (WKP) by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources back in 2019.

According to PLN, local workers accounted for 85% of the workforce involved in the current progress of the project. PLN has also conducted a series of Pre-Free, Prior and Informed Consent (Pre-FPIC) activities to provide information regarding the project plans and potential impacts to the local communities. Avianda Edwin Fachruddin, Manager of the Nusra 2 Project Implementation Unit, describes this approach as “crucial for fostering harmonious relationships with communities surrounding the project.”

As part of the community engagement efforts, PLN is also preparing for the construction of clean water facilities that will benefit the communities near the project site.
