Initial results positive for geothermal heating project in Munster, Germany

Early results of well workover for a geothermal heating project in Munster, Germany, are positive with thermal waters measured at 154 ºC.
Initial work on the deep geothermal heating project in Munster in Lower Saxony, Germany has yield positive results, with thermal waters at 154 ºC encountered at a targeted section of the borehole. Preliminary evaluation indicates that commercial utilization is realistic, but the findings will be assessed with experts before the succeeding steps are decided.
The geothermal project in Munster is being executed by Heide-Geo GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stadtwerke Munster-Bispingen GmbH. In 2025, the company announced the acquisition of two former natural gas wells from ExxonMobil which provided the foundation for a geothermal doublet. Even with the workover and completion requirements, the provision of the two wells significantly lowered the cost for the geothermal project, allowing it to proceed with the EUR 7 million grant that had been secured earlier.
Work is currently still ongoing at the drill site near the B71 road, located just outside of Munster. Planning is also ongoing for the supply pipeline to the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) base in Munster, which is the project’s major anchor customer.
