INPEX plans geothermal expansion in Japan and Indonesia

With continued development on geothermal projects in Japan and Indonesia, Japanese INPEX looks at further development in both countries.

In a recent release on its Strategic Vision, Japanese oil and gas company INPEX announces concrete expansion plans for its geothermal activities with a focus on Japan and Indonesia.

The company announced that it plans to secure 1,000 to 2,000 MW of installed power generation capacity, mainly offshore wind and geothermal power generation. It further targets to “become a key player accelerating business expansion using assets acquired through M&A and other means as a platform.”

With its plans for further expansion with a focus on Japan and Indonesia. the company plans the promotion of geothermal development in Indonesia and consider expansion of the Muara Laboh geothermal power plant. INPEX acquired a stake in the Muara Laboh geothermal project in Indonesia in December 2021 .

The company will continue its development of the Oyasu geotermal power project in Akita Prefecture in Japan with a targeted COD in 2026.

INPEX also talks about pursuing new projects in both countries in addition to continuing geothermal surveys at Amemasudake in Hokkaido, Japan. At the same time it plans to explore the “practical application of various geothermal businesses such as next-generation geothermal development technologies, etc.”.
