Job – Geothermal Grid Integration Engineer – government work, U.S.

Boston Government Services in Golden, Colorado is seeking to hire a Geothermal Grid Integration Engineer, who will be providing technical and project management support to the Department of Energy’s Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO).

Responsibilities:

• Working in an integrated team environment and supporting the federal client, the candidate will be responsible for supporting federal research and development (R&D) programs within GTO, with a focus on the U.S. electricity transmission system (or grid).
• Contribute to the development of new research initiatives to advance the state-of-the-arts and serve as a technology expert to evaluate technology area portfolios, conduct gap analysis, and develop strategic roadmaps. They may contribute to the planning of new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) including program concepts, requirement documents, workshops, merit reviews, briefings, and award negotiations.
• Assist in the technology management for a portfolio of R&D projects.

Requirements:

• Background in electric power systems planning and operation; renewable energy generation; smart grid; industrial control and automation; and/or energy storage and have knowledge.
• Experience performing economic analyses and independent research on energy issues and policies.
• Experience analyzing issues associated with the regulation of the electric power industry, including an understanding of evolving policy and other market constraints on the bulk power system.
• Broad knowledge of federal, state, and- where applicable local- policy and regulatory authorities governing utilities, power markets, power pools, power exchanges, and independent system operators.
• Knowledge of rapidly evolving power sales and markets that ideally includes experience with Regional Transmission Organization/Independent System Operator (RTO/ISO) operations and electricity transmission operations.
• Demonstrated understanding of energy (day-ahead and real-time), capacity, regulation, reserves, and other ancillary services markets is essential. Familiarity with the Western Energy Imbalance Market and California’s decarbonization studies (E3 Pathways and the SB100 policy) are desirable.
• An understanding of how variable renewable energy grid penetration, distributed generation, market prices, transmission constraints, and industrial electrification are likely to drive future grid needs. The candidate should ideally demonstrate key insights from this evolving landscape regarding the role that firm generation resources like geothermal power can play in meeting future grid needs.
• An understanding of the value of geothermal power generation technology capabilities, grid attributes, and limitations within the evolving policy and market landscape (preferred).
• An ability to identify activities that GTO can take to increase the competitiveness and grid resiliency/reliability contributions of U.S. geothermal power generation. This should include an understanding of activities and needs identified in the GeoVision Roadmap that can be the most impactful to the geothermal industry in terms of its participation in evolving electricity markets.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Physical Science.
• > 5 years’ experience.
• Experience working with the U.S. electricity transmission system.
• Project Management experience.
• Excellent communication, organization, and analytical skills.
• Ability to clearly articulate and defend the problem statement, the technical approaches, and expected impacts of the solutions.
• Self-starter, an ability to work both independently and as part of a highly dynamic collaborative team
• U.S. Citizenship
• Willing to work in downtown Washington DC (position will begin remotely)
